Dehumanised: How Tyrants Normalise Genocide
In the current genodice in Gaza, one of the mechanisms used is that of dehumanisation of the Palestinians; the way a caricatured image of Palestinians as subhuman is used to justify the horrific genocide. This is played out by politicians, in schools, on the media. The skewed projections of dehumanised victims in images and narrative have very considerable effects of limiting empathy for them.
This course focuses on constructs of dehumanisation, with a noted emphasis on Palestine. It is divided into important episodes ranging from defining othering and dehumanisation, current and historical examples of dehumanisation of Palestinians, the Islamic outlook on how we should ‘see’ each other and lastly, numerous historical examples of humanisation of Jews under Islam.
